UNITED STATES STIGA SHOOTOUT
Table Hockey Championship Tournament
September 16, 2006
Twenty-one table hockey players representing countries from around the world, competed in the United States Stiga Shootout Table Hockey Championships on Saturday at Chaparral Elementary School in Ladera Ranch.
Espen Moe, from Trondheim, Norway was crowned as the Division I and overall tournament champion after a full day of table hockey game play.
Playing with intensity matching their counterparts in the National Hockey League battling for the Stanley Cup and Olympic hockey players competing for the gold medal, Moe swept Ron Marsik of Chicago, Illinois 4-0 in the best of seven championship trophy finals. In addition to his trophy, Moe also took home the tournament championship prize money of $500.
The United States Stiga Shootout featured an opening round robin of 21 games -- when all players had the opportunity to play everyone else once -- to four levels of divisional play based on their performance in the opening round robin -- to four divisional championship playoffs for trophies and prize money. Each competitor had the potential of playing up to 42 games on the day. Trophies were awarded to all competitors. The international array of table hockey players ranged in age from 7 to 50 plus.
The table hockey tournament also featured three of the top four table hockey players from South Korea. Justin Na and younger brother Jacob are students at Chaparral Elementary School. Sam Ko is a student at Ladera Ranch Middle School.
Tiffany Soto had the distinction of being the only female competitor. She is also the #1 ranked female table hockey player in the United States! Tiffany and her older brother Ricky attend Chaparral.
The table hockey tournament was also a family affair. Four sets of fathers and sons competed. Mike Allen from Valencia and his two sons, Randy and Wynn. AJ Sarma from Irvine and his son Rohith. Michael Hart from Ladera Ranch and his son Sean who attends Chaparral. Plus, tournament organizer and Principal of Chaparral Elementary School, Dr. Kevin Rafferty, and his two sons, Sean and Brian, who both attend Ladera Ranch Middle School.
Table Hockey is truly an international sport. There are currently 5,144 ranked table hockey players in the world representing 61 countries.
Tournament champion Moe is currently ranked #17 in Norway and #179 in the world.
Marsik, from the Chicago suburb of Hickory Hills, is ranked #5 in the USA.
In case you were wondering, the current #1 ranked player in the USA is ranked #105 in the world.
So how did this table hockey tournament come to Ladera Ranch? Dr. Rafferty formed a free table hockey club based out of Chaparral Elementary. Rafferty then set a target date for an annual tournament with trophies and prize money in an effort to attract some of the very best table hockey players to come to Southern California to compete.
The table hockey club, known as the Southern California Stiga Table Hockey League (SCSTHL), is now the largest table hockey club in all of North America with 69 players to date -- and growing.
The free table hockey club meets at Chaparral Elementary School approximately two Sunday afternoons per month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on a drop-in basis. For more information and a list of game playing dates, contact Dr. Rafferty at: krafferty@capousd.org
Special thanks to the Ladera Ranch Education Foundation for funding the grant to purchase several table hockey games thus allowing the club to be formed, grow, and thrive.
Thanks to the support of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, all tournament participants were eligible to win tickets to Anaheim Ducks hockey games at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.
Stiga is the official makers of table hockey games approved by the ITHF. Stiga table hockey games are not available in stores. They are made in Sweden and available through various Internet retailers.
